“I have been coming to Colorado since I was a child and my heart is here.”
Meet Kathleen Friend, M.D.
Dr. Friend is board-certified in psychiatry. She trained in Adult and Geriatric psychiatry with Residency and Fellowship training at Cornell University Medical School in NY. She has over 30 years of experience post-residency in Psychiatry including work in outpatient, hospital, community mental health and nursing home settings. Since 2016 she has focused on children and families . She is the former sole proprietor of Integrative Psychiatry of the Berkshires in Massachusetts until she moved to the West.
Her focus is looking for underlying biological contributors to mental health issues and treating these before going the medication route or to optimize current medication treatment.” Often the presenting issue for kids comes down to unacceptable behaviors at home or school that are causing conflict. Although behavioral programs are important, often there are underlying highly individual biochemical issues that need to be addressed.” Traditional psychiatry does not look for these and treatment is guided by symptoms and educated guesses based on evidence based medicine recommendations which do not take individuality into account. Dr Friend believes we can do better and patients deserve solutions which are not mainstream yet.
“Every step toward healing a child is a step toward healing the world.”
Dr. Friend is available for consultation to other psychiatrists, pediatricians or other health providers who want to incorporate functional medicine concepts into their treatment plans for mental health issues.

I defer this to your current psychiatrist or pediatrician but can provide consultation to them based on the results of your biomedical evaluation. I will recommend non-pharmacologic supplements when appropriate based on individualized testing. I am licensed in Arizona and Colorado and can prescribe medications but unless it is a true emergency, will defer this to your current provider.
-
No. Although I have been trained to do this, my evaluations do not depend on a specific diagnosis since we are looking for underlying biochemical, nutritional and genetic issues that cross traditional diagnostic categories. I will provide diagnoses for the purpose of lab testing and insurance bills but not for schools or other agencies that require documentation for specific services.
